How to Contact Your DC Councilmember

DC’s youth deserve more than a summer stipend—they deserve fair pay, meaningful work experience, and real opportunities to prepare for college and careers. That’s why Councilmember Zachary Parker introduced Bill 25-744, which would raise wages for youth in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP) to match DC’s minimum wage and expand participation to help more young people succeed.

But here’s the thing: legislation doesn’t just pass on its own. Councilmembers need to hear from you—the people they represent—to prioritize bills like this one. Your voice can make the difference.

Why You Should Contact Your Councilmember

City Councilmembers are responsible for reviewing, debating, and voting on legislation that affects DC residents. They often have dozens of bills on their agenda, and hearing directly from constituents shows them what issues matter most. By contacting your Councilmember about MBSYEP wage reform, you’re:

  • Amplifying youth voices: Showing support for fair pay and better opportunities.

  • Putting pressure on decision-makers: Reminding Councilmembers that their constituents expect action.

  • Helping build a stronger community: When youth earn a fair wage and gain workforce experience, the entire city benefits.

How to Reach Your Councilmember

  1. Find your Councilmember: DC has eight wards, each represented by a Councilmember. You can look up who represents your ward on our contact the council page.

  2. Call or email:

    • Phone: 202-724-8000 (main DC Council line—ask to be connected to your Councilmember)

    • Email: You can email your Councilmember directly or use EOM@DC.gov for broader support.

  3. Write a short, clear message: Keep it simple and respectful. Include:

    • Your name and that you’re a DC resident.

    • That you support Bill 25-744 to raise MBSYEP wages to the DC minimum wage.

    • A sentence or two about why this matters to you personally or your community.

    • Ask your Councilmember to vote yes and prioritize the bill.

Example:

“Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I live in Ward [X]. I’m writing to support Bill 25-744 to raise wages for youth in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. Paying young people a fair wage and giving them meaningful work experience is critical for their future and for our city. Please prioritize this bill and vote yes.”

Make Your Voice Heard

Legislation only passes when people speak up. By contacting your Councilmember, you’re not just asking for better pay—you’re investing in DC’s youth, workforce, and future. Every call and email counts.

Let’s make sure DC’s young people get the pay and opportunities they deserve. Take action today.
